| California Gray Whale 60" | California Gray Whale 5 Feet Long - made from recycled clear Douglas Fir salvaged from a building being torn down in Hollywood. The wood was approximately 90 years old as it was used to construct the building in the early 1920’s. The lumber was full of nails, screws, and bolts which were all located with a metal detector and removed. The lumber was planed and cut to standard width, then laminated into a large block approximately 6 feet by 2 feet. More of the lumber was attached for the tail and fins. This provide the starting point for carving and forming the sculpture. The finished piece was mounted on a stand that had one side left in the natural condition showing the rusted nails holes that were throughout the entire set of lumber. It was finished with a natural oil consisting of linseed oil, tung oil, and carnauba wax. The piece took two months of mostly full time work to complete. | | |
